Abstract

Thirty two sesame oil samples were scanned by NIR spectroscopy and principal component analysis and canonical variate analysis were applied to the spectral data to investigate the possibility of NIR spectroscopy as a tool to discriminate the product country of origin. The first and second canonical functions generated from ten principal components second derivative log (1/R) data for the 400¡2500 §¬ range was the most effective way to discriminate between 3 sample groups comprising 13 sesame oil samples manufactured from Korean sesame seed, 10 sesame oil samples manufactured in Korea from non-Korean sesame seed, and 9 sesame oil samples manufactured outside Korea from non-Korean sesame seed. The canonical variate analysis classified 100% of calibration samples correctly. Considerable differences in the second derivative log (1/R) spectra were found between the three groups at 498¡500, 668, 7698¡1724, 2242¡2256, 2302¡2306, 2328 and 2348¡2352 §¬.
